Coaching Leaders to
Equitable Outcomes.
According to the South Region Education Board, Good Principals Aren’t Born: They’re Mentored. “Successful schools are complex, collaborative institutions requiring a high level of performance from every professional. School success critically begins with the school principal who — day in and day out — has prime responsibility for ensuring that all students meet challenging grade-level and college- and career-readiness standards.” According to the Learning Policy Institute school leaders are vital to school transformation work. In fact principals are the second most important school level factor associated with increased student achievement and there are “virtually no documented instances of troubled schools being turned around without the intervention of a powerful leader.” Therefore it is clear that the principal’s leadership skills determine whether a school becomes a dynamic learning organization or a failed enterprise.
Although a principal’s leadership determines whether a school lives up to its community’s expectations to ensure all children reach their highest potential, many principals are not prepared to lead their schools in a way that maximizes outcomes for all children which leads to frustration from internal stakeholders such as teachers and staff, and external stakeholders. There are decades of research about factors that influence a leader’s abilities to lead an effective school, however few organizations provide the type of personalized mentoring and coaching support that aligns to those success factors, for school leaders on the job, which will ultimately lead to school transformation.
